Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about irrigation, landscape lighting, and seasonal tune-ups in San Diego.

Irrigation

What is the difference between drip and spray irrigation?

Spray heads throw water over an area, which suits lawns. Drip emitters release water slowly at the base of each plant, which suits shrubs, beds, and planters. Many yards use both, with lawn zones on spray and planting beds on drip.

What is a drip conversion?

A drip conversion replaces the spray heads in a planting bed with drip tubing or emitters, so water goes to the root zone instead of onto walls, walks, and leaves. It usually reuses the existing valve and adds a filter and pressure regulator for the drip zone.

What does a smart irrigation controller do?

A smart, or weather-based, controller adjusts watering schedules using local weather information instead of running the same fixed program every day. Each zone can be set up for its own plants, sun, and soil.

Why does one part of my yard stay dry while another stays soggy?

Common causes are a broken or clogged head, a head knocked out of alignment, a leak in the line, low pressure in that zone, or a schedule that does not match the plants. An irrigation repair visit traces the symptom back to the cause.

Landscape Lighting

What is low-voltage landscape lighting?

Low-voltage lighting runs from a transformer that steps household power down to a lower voltage for the fixtures. It powers path lights, uplights, step lights, and accent fixtures around the yard.

What kinds of fixtures are used?

Path lights mark walkways and borders, uplights point up into trees and onto walls, step lights sit in risers or walls, and accent fixtures pick out specific features. A design walk-through decides which ones fit your yard.

Some of my landscape lights stopped working. Can they be repaired?

Usually, yes. The cause can be a lamp, a fixture, a corroded connection, damaged wire, or the transformer or timer. Repair starts by testing along the system to find which one it is.

Tune-Ups

What does a seasonal tune-up cover?

Controller schedules adjusted for the season, each irrigation zone run and checked for leaks and coverage, heads cleaned or re-aimed, and lighting fixtures checked, cleaned, and re-aimed.

Why do schedules need to change through the year?

Plants need different amounts of water as the weather changes. A schedule set once and left alone can overwater in cooler months or underwater in hotter ones.
